Utah football: Utes hire assistant, shuffle coaching duties
First Published Feb 12 2014 10:12 am • Last Updated Feb 25 2014 04:42 pm

It didn’t take long for coach Kyle Whittingham to fill the coaching vacancy created when quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson departed for Mississippi State as Whittingham has hired Taylor Stubblefield to coach Utah’s receivers.

Stubblefield, from Yakima, Wash., was an All-American receiver at Purdue and has coached wide receivers at the college level since 2007, most recently at Wake Forest.

Whittingham also announced he will coach the special teams, much like Urban Meyer did in 2003-04, and Aaron Roderick, who has coached the receivers since 2005, will coach the quarterbacks.

Whittingham said he would act more as a special teams coordinator than coach.

"We’ll split up the duties between the coaches but everything will run through me," he said. "I was the special teams coordinator in my first job with Idaho State and it’s something I’ve always enjoyed."

As for Stubblefield, Whittingham said he was a coach that he and newly hired offensive coordinator Dave Christensen liked.

"We knew him through our coaching circles, did our homework on him and he was the one we targeted," Whittingham said. "He is a young, up and coming coaching with a lot of energy and an excellent recruiter who has been working his way through the coaching ranks."

Stubblefield also coached at Central Washington (2007), Eastern Michigan (graduate assistant in 2008), Illinois State (2009-10), Central Michigan (2011) and New Mexico (2012).
