Utah quarterback Adam Schulz said he wasn’t nervous before Utah’s game at Oregon and he won’t be nervous Saturday when the Utes play at Washington State. Apparently he is too focused on other things — like getting the Utes to a bowl game — to have time to be nervous.
Schulz, a sophomore who was elevated to the starting role when a damaged intracranial artery was found in Travis Wilson last week, said he wants to continue Utah’s bowl tradition. The Utes went to nine straight bowl games before the streak was snapped last year.
Now Utah must win its last two games to be eligible this year.
"We’re not used to not going to bowl games," he said. "Jordan [Wynn] left going to bowl games, coach [Brian] Johnson went to bowls, big bowls. The thing that is left for us to do is get to a bowl game. That is our goal right now."
Schulz went 13 of 31 for 181 yards with a touchdown and an interception in Utah’s 44-21 loss to Oregon.
Described as a "courageous" effort by coach Kyle Whittingham, Schulz said he knows he has to be better than that for the Utes to beat the Cougars.
Schulz said he learned he’d be starting against the Ducks mid-week. The extra time he has to prepare this week will help, he said.
"I’ve got to do more film study and try to do everything right," he said. "But I know what is expected."
Whittingham emphasized that the Utes won’t know if Wilson can continue playing football for three months when more tests are performed.
When he met with the team on Monday, Wilson said he wanted to remain involved, Whittingham said.
"It’s not a done deal and we are holding out hope that perhaps at some point he can return," Whittingham said.
Until then, Whittingham said the Utes have to adjust and keep their focus on winning games.
"It’s tough because he was one of the leaders and a team captain," he said. "But we have to move forward and do what we can do. Both Adam and Conner [Manning] had a good day of practice."
The Utes practiced inside Tuesday due to the bad weather. … Geoffrey Norwood ranks third in the Pac-12 in punt return average (9.0) with 24 returns for 217 yards. … Utah doesn’t have any players on its roster from the state of Washington.
