Travis Wilson might be entrenched as Utah’s starting quarterback, but his presence doesn’t mean all is settled at the position.

Returner Adam Schulz and freshman Brandon Cox are competing for the backup spot in spring practice.

The Utes also signed Houston product Micah Thomas and Lake Forest, Calif., native Conner Manning, who will be here in the fall.

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham is hopeful the influx of youth will give the Utes a solid stable of quarterbacks for the future.

As for the two participating in camp, the 6-foot-1 Schulz is a walk-on who has earned a reputation for his strong arm.

Cox, a 6-2, 192-pound freshman, is a more athletic quarterback who could fill the role of being a running threat.

"We are encouraged by our quarterbacks," Whittingham said. "Brandon definitely brings an athletic element, and he throws a good ball."

Schulz said he feels he already has a good grasp of what new co-offensive coordinator Dennis Erickson wants out of the quarterbacks. Cox admittedly is still adjusting to the speed of college ball, but is optimistic he can make a quick adjustment.

"I am here to play, and I only play one speed and that is 100 percent," he said. "I just need to get bigger and get in the weight room so I can be like these guys."

In the meantime, Wilson continues to get praise from the coaches for his offseason work. Whittingham said Wilson now weighs 240.

"He got stronger in the weight room, and it has helped him because he has a much stronger arm and quicker release," Whittingham said.

Good numbers

Depth was an issue for the offensive line in 2012, but the Utes don’t think that will be an issue next year thanks to a large signing class and several players who have recovered from injuries.

Whittingham said the Utes have 18 healthy offensive linemen participating in spring camp.

"We’ve never had that before," he said. "It is a great opportunity."

Open practice

The Utes are scheduled to practice Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the practice fields. The public is welcome to watch, but if the weather is bad, practice will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and moved indoors, where the public isn’t allowed due to space constraints.
