With two impact players in running back John White and safety Eric Rowe questionable for the BYU game with injuries, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham made the decision to no longer give injury reports unless they were season-ending.
His reasoning was that there is no sense in helping opponents prepare.
However, if Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott has his way, the league could soon have a conference-wide injury reporting system to eliminate disclosure issues.
Scott told reporters during halftime of the USC-Stanford game on Saturday that he wanted to discuss the matter at an athletic directors meeting in October.
He noted the NFL has a system where teams are required to describe the status of all their injured players.
Such disclosure would be fine by Whittingham, he said.
"As long as there is a level playing field, I have no qualms whatsoever," Whittingham said. "The NFL system is great, and as long as everybody is on the same page I am fine with that. What we don't want is an unlevel playing field."
How schools report injuries caught Scott's attention when USC banned a local reporter from practice for two weeks for reporting an injury of a kicker. Washington and Oregon also have stopped giving injury reports out of concern that it would give opponents an advantage.
Whittingham said there was no specific reason that he decided to change his policy.
"It's just a matter of why give your opponent an advantage and knowledge if you don't have to," he said. "I'm all for a blanket uniform policy. That is something that is a good idea."
Although Whittingham technically isn't giving injury reports, he did tell media members that running White didn't practice Tuesday.
However, the Utes maintain that White, who missed the BYU game with an ankle injury, will be ready to go by Saturday.
"We are making sure we get him feeling exactly right," Whittingham said.
Saturday's game will be the first time the Utes have played in Sun Devil Stadium since beating Pitt in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl.
"Those were some good memories," said Whittingham, who earned his first win as a coach with that victory since he was designated a co-coach along with Urban Meyer.
