Police said a man committed suicide Thursday by jumping off a balcony at the Salt Lake City Public Library.
SLCPD Detective Carlie Wiechman said surveillance footage shows the man deliberately jumping, and no evidence has shown the fall could have been an accident or involved foul play.
Library spokeswoman Julianne Hancock confirmed the death occurred at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Weichman said a group of schoolchildren were in the library, which is characterized by open spaces and expansive views from floor to floor.
"We're working on getting them what they need," she said of the children. She would not discuss the age or number of children who witnessed the death or which school they were from.
According to Salt Lake City police department records, this marks the third death of a suicidal person who has jumped from part of the structure. In March of 2011, a woman plunged from the fourth floor. In July of 2005 a woman jumped from the roof of the building.
