Tyler Shreve and Griff Robles are no longer in a dead heat for the edge in the quarterback role in Jordan Wynn's absence as Shreve, a freshman from California, has moved ahead of Robles on the depth chart.

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham has been impressed with Shreve's development all spring, but Shreve didn't officially move ahead of Robles until after Saturday's scrimmage, when he was 6-of-13 passing for 147 yards and two touchdowns.

Robles, a sophomore who has some limited game experience, was 8 of 15 for 102 yards and three touchdowns.

"He did a nice job in the scrimmage and made some big plays and did a nice job running the offense," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said of Shreve. "Both he and Griff have made progress and are still a long ways from where they need to be. It's still a tight battle, but right now Tyler has the edge."

Both quarterbacks are still behind Wynn, whose recovery from shoulder surgery continues to go well.

However Shreve, who is playing baseball in addition to football, has impressed the coaches with his strong arm.

"He made some big plays in the throw game," Whittingham said. "His arm strength is his strong suit."

Other changes

There were several other changes on the two deep following the scrimmage. Center Tevita Stevens has moved to left guard since Sam Brenner is out with a concussion, and Vyncent Jones takes over at center. … Ron Tongaonevai has switched from the offense to the defensive line. … Redshirt freshman Dres Anderson is ahead of sophomore Reggie Dunn at one receiving spot. Dexter Ransom and Kenneth Scott continue to battle for an edge at "X" receiver while DeVonte Christopher is sidelined with a hamstring injury. … Dave Kruger has returned from end to defensive tackle, backing up James Aiono while Tevita Finau is listed as the starter at left end.

New look coming

The Utes start converting their logos from the MWC to the Pac-12 next week. The removal of the old logos will start Monday and should be completed by Thursday's practice.

The Utes had hoped to have the logos in place this week but the project was delayed a week due to "manufacturing issues," discovered when the logos were unveiled Monday.

To each his own

Whittingham normally spends most of his time at practice overseeing the defense, an area the former defensive coordinator naturally gravitates toward in the workout sessions.

That habit hasn't changed with the addition of Norm Chow as coordinator.

"Coach Chow is one of the best offensive coordinators in the country," Whittingham said. "Me, I'm a defensive guy by nature. That's well-known. I try to know exactly what's going on, but I try not to meddle.

"You don't want to know too much and become dangerous. So I let them do their thing. … That's why coach Chow is in the position he's in — to bring some things to our program that can help us out."
