Utah's first game as a Pac-12 member is a big one — at USC on Sept. 10, the Utes' first visit to Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum since 1948.

The Pac-12 schedule, which was released Friday, has the Utes hosting Washington on Oct. 1 in its first Pac-12 home game. The Huskies, coached by former BYU player Steve Sarkisian, have never played in Salt Lake City and hold a 6-0 advantage against the Utes.

The last time the teams played was in 1979, when Washington won 41-7.

Other home games are against Arizona State (Oct. 8), Oregon State (Oct. 29), UCLA (Nov. 12) and Colorado (Nov. 26).

The Utes are competing in the South Division, meaning they will play Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, UCLA and USC every year as well as four teams from the North Division as part of a two-year home-and-home series.

The Utes' 2011 and 2012 North Division opponents are California, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State.

The Utes won't get their shots at North Division members Oregon and Stanford until the 2013 season, when those schools replace Cal and Washington State in the schedule cycle.

"Without question, this is the most challenging schedule in [Utah] football history, but also the most exciting," Utah athletic director Chris Hill said. "Not only is our Pac-12 Conference schedule demanding, but we have nonconference road games at BYU and Pitt. Next season is the start of a new era of Utah athletics."

The Utes open the season Thursday, Sept. 1, against Montana State.

The Utes are 52-90-3 against the Pac-12 overall and 4-3 under coach Kyle Whittingham.

Utah's visit to the Coliseum to play USC will be the first since a 27-0 loss in 1948, which was part of a six-game losing streak to the Trojans. Utah ended the streak in 2001 with a 10-6 win in the Las Vegas Bowl.

The Trojans were hit hard by NCAA sanctions this year for lack of institutional control after a four-year investigation that revealed Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush had received improper benefits.

USC is serving a two-year bowl ban, four years of probation and the loss of 30 football scholarships during a three-year span.

Game times and television coverage won't be determined until later.
