Prep football: Brighton 30 Fremont 22
Cottonwood Heights • The Brighton Bengals may be loaded, but on Friday night, it was the Robbie Hutchins and Simi Fehoko show.
The Bengals jumped ahead early and weathered a Fremont Siler Wolves run, holding on for a 30-22 win.
Hutchins and Fehoko connected on three touchdowns — of 32, 35, and 23 yards. Fehoko finished with 104 yards receiving on four catches.
"They’ve had some good rhythm for a couple years, now," Bengals coach Ryan Bullett said. "We kind of thought there were a couple things we could do, went to it early, and they connected."
Of course, Fehoko did not stop there, as he also had a dazzling one-handed interception that he took back nearly 50 yards.
"Our defensive line was getting good pressure on the quarterback all day," Fehoko said. "[Fremont’s Justin Shaw is] a good quarterback, he was just getting a lot of pressure, so he was throwing it up and I made a play for the team. … [Offensively,] our line was getting good blocks and Robbie was just putting it in the right place."
Fremont, for its part, hung in for a good portion of the game, but Cody Barton and Osa Masina joined Fehoko in contributing some defensive highlights, with two forced fumbles and a safety, respectively.
Whenever Silver Wolves quarterback, Shaw, and wide receiver Paxton Merrill connected, big plays happened — as they hooked up for 11 catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns — but their performances were just not enough to upset the loaded Bengals.
Despite the win, the Bengals know they need to clean up their game.
"We played a little better in some areas this week, but we’re having a lot of penalties," Bullett said. "That’s two weeks in a row with a lot of penalties, a lot of mental mistakes. We‘ve got to get that cleaned up, and hopefully we get that fixed before league starts. I don’t think we’ll win those games in league if we’re doing that."
