Woods Cross • Sometimes it’s not a big deal when a team plays a larger school one classification up.
On Friday night, it was a big deal.
Woods Cross 27, Judge 14Judge jumps out to a 14-0 lead on TD passes from Ayden Auer to Braden Pelly and Michael Kearns in the first half.
» One of Woods Cross’ scores comes on a turnover, when Lance Moyes scoops up a Judge fumble and rambles 17 yards to paydirt.
» The host Wildcats overcome committing 181 yards in penalties.
Not because Class 3A Judge Memorial lost 27-14 to Class 4A Woods Cross, but because of how it happened.
After getting out to a 14-0 lead, the Bulldogs ended up falling to the Wildcats thanks to resiliency on Woods Cross’ part and just plain ol’ attrition.
"They’re a great football team. They are big, they are strong, and fast all over the field," Woods Cross coach Justin Spencer said of Judge after his team’s victory. "Tonight, I think we were just able to wear them down.
"That’s what it came down to. They have most of their guys going both ways," he added. "Most of our guys go only one way."
The game was in a 14-14 tie to start the second half when injuries began to add to the problems for Judge Memorial (1-1).
Starting running back Max Barnett, who had 78 yards rushing, hurt an ankle on the Bulldogs’ second offensive play of the third quarter and would never return.
Barnett’s replacement, junior Keola Palau, was injured with 10:15 left in the game. He was taken out on a stretcher and loaded onto an ambulance as the game was delayed for 20 minutes.
Judge coach James Cordova declined to give details of Palau’s injury, but said that his player "got hurt pretty bad, but he’ll be alright."
"We ran out of guys," Cordova added. "We lost five starters in this game."
Woods Cross (2-0) broke the deadlock when quarterback Tanner Hammond found receiver Jake Hammond with a 35-yard touchdown pass with 10:42 left in the contest — just before Palau’s injury.
The Wildcats got some needed insurance, with 1:54 remaining, when Hammond connected with Keadon Adamson for a 49-yard pass to extend the lead to two touchdowns.
