Prep soccer: Lehi, Bountiful to open defense of 5A, 4A crowns

Viewmont soccer coach Dave Wigham has been coaching the sport long enough to know that any team that makes the Class 5A state tournament can catch fire and do damage.

But his Region 1 champion Vikings certainly have to rank among the favorites when the 5A tournament begins Tuesday when Viewmont will be hosting American Fork.

"We are playing well right now and, more than that, we are healthy," said Wigham in assessing his team’s chances. "It sounds cliché, but I’ve been around long enough to know that all 16 teams in the playoffs have a shot at it."

Viewmont has been led by Lucas Cawley and Mike Johnson on offense. Matt Stringham and goalkeeper Porter May lead a defense that has not given up many goals this year.

Other region champions to watch include Riverton, Bingham and Taylorsville. Taylorsville will have a tough first-round matchup when the Warriors host always-strong Brighton Tuesday. Defending champion Lehi also has to figure into the mix. The Pioneers open the tournament on the road against Layton.

The Class 4A tournament opens Wednesday, with higher seeds hosting opening-round contests.

Perhaps the best game in the opener sees defending champion Bountiful hosting traditionally strong Murray.

East, Skyline, Maple Mountain, Logan and Box Elder figure to be in the 4A mix as well.
