When the Class 2A girls' softball tournament opens Thursday in Spanish Fork, Region 16 champion Manti and star hitter and pitcher Lizzy Palmer will be favored to win their second title in three years.

Until dropping an 8-5 decision to Class 5A Taylorsville this past Saturday, the Templars were undefeated as they completed a schedule that included some 5A teams as well as most of their top competitors going into Thursday's tournament.

Manti opens the busy first day of the three-day tournament against Region 13 fourth-place team Kanab on Thursday at 2 p.m., at the Spanish Fork Softball Complex, where the event is being held.

There are 16 first- and second-round games scheduled Thursday with the first games beginning at noon . Winners of first-round contests will play at 6 p.m., while losers all play at 4 p.m.

Defending champion San Juan captured first place in Region 15 and will open its title defense against Parowan.

While Region 13 champion Enterprise and Region 14 winner Altamont are in the mix, Manti enters the event as the clear favorite.
