Soaring Eagle coach Troy Davis is happy with his team’s winning streak, but realistic about his team’s chances when the tournament begins.

"We are peaking at the right time," said Davis, whose team hosts Tooele at 1:30 p.m. in a first-round game. "But it’s always a challenge when the state tournament starts. It’s a whole new challenge."

Davis is wary of tough Region 9 teams from southwestern Utah, where a longer season due to warm weather helps teams such as league champion Desert Hills and runner-up Cedar City, which must be listed as among the favorites along with Region 12 champion Payson and Region 11 winner Stansbury.

In fact, Region 9 was so strong this season that defending 3A state champion Snow Canyon failed to qualify for the tournament.

"There are strong teams in that region that are not going to make it to the tournament," said Dvis. "They are that good down there."

Juan Diego has been led by pitchers Ryan Green and Alex Baeza. Preston Davis is leading the team batting with Justin Kummer and Josh Kirch also having good years.
