Manti and St. Joseph have staged memorable Class 2A boys’ soccer games the past two seasons, last year in the semifinals and 2012 in the title game.
When the tournament begins this year, though, the two rivals won’t have to wait long to play. Manti, which joins Parowan, defending champion American Leadership Academy and Waterford as the top seeds, opens the tournament at home Wednesday against St. Joseph.

The Templars knocked the Jays out of the tournament in 2013 in a memorable shootout in the semifinals before losing their title to ALA. The year before, Manti beat the Ogden-based Catholic school for the state title.
There are eight opening games Wednesday, with Parowan hosting Intermountain Christian, Layton Christian traveling to Wasatch Academy, Grand traveling to Salt Lake to meet Rowland Hall, Beaver at ALA, Wendover traveling to Delta, Merit Academy hosting Delta and Gunnison traveling to Waterford. All games begin at 4 p.m.
The 3A boys’ tournament gets underway Thursday with Pine View, Stansbury, Payson and Juan Diego holding the top seeds.
While defending champion Wasatch won’t be back to defend its title, runner-up Park City does return. The Miners host North Sanpete. Other 4 p.m. First round games Thursday include Uintah at Carbon, Grantsville at Pine View, Cedar City at Stansbury,
Bear River at Dixie, Morgan at Payson, Richfield at Juan Diego and Snow Canyon at Ben Lomond. All games are at 4 p.m.
