Pleasant Grove • For most of Friday night’s game, the scoreboard could have used "MC" as the home team abbreviation, instead of "PG."
That’s because for a good part of Pleasant Grove’s 72-50 Region 4 victory against Riverton, power forward Matt Conway was outscoring the Silverwolves.
O Pleasant Grove’s Matt Conway scores a career-high 38 points to lead the Vikings over Riverton.
» The Vikings improve to 12-1 overall, 2-0 in Region 4, heading into a showdown with Lone Peak on Tuesday.
One week after setting a career high in scoring against Lehi, the Vikings’ 6-foot-6 senior scored 38 points and dominated the paint at both ends of the floor.
"My team knows I like to run, so we keep pushing it," said Conway, who scored 34 points last week. "They like to feed me, and I got really good looks."
Conway had 22 points at halftime as the Vikings (12-1, 2-0) jumped out to a 38-22 lead at the break. A 12-foot jumper in the second quarter was the longest of his 14 field goals.
"We just told him [Conway] if you get where you’re supposed to get, we’ll get you the ball," Pleasant Grove coach Randy McAllister said. "Every team that has a player like Matt is going to look there first. We’d be a fool not to.
"He’s doing the work and the guards are being super unselfish."
A Riley Court-to Conway alley-oop capped the first-half run, and the Vikings didn’t look back as they won their 10th consecutive game and set up a showdown with defending state champion Lone Peak next week.
Forrest Pincock scored 12 points for the Vikings, who played stifling defense to offset Conway’s offensive display.
"That’s PG defense for you right there," Conway said. "We didn’t come out how we wanted to against Lehi — we came out a little soft. We wanted to push up on them [Riverton] right from the get-go and get up early."
Jaron Jones scored 13 points and Jeff Arens scored 12 points for the Silverwolves (9-5, 2-1). Brandon Sly, Riverton’s leading scorer on the season, didn’t score until the 2:18 mark of the second quarter and finished with 10 points.
