Prep boys' basketball: Alta defeats Davis 67-55

The last time the Alta boys' basketball team hit the hardwood, it was a lopsided loss to Lone Peak.

On the other hand, that was the Class 5A state championship game last March, and on Tuesday night Alta looked every bit a team that made it to the finals and then brought almost all of its starters back for the following season.

In the season opener for both teams, the Alta Hawks prevailed at home over Davis, 67-55, never trailing in the process.

"Season openers always have their ups and downs and you see what you can do," Alta coach Jim Barker said. "I like a lot of what I see, but we're going to have to get better in a lot of circumstances."

The versatility of senior Landon Albrecht paved the way for an early Hawks lead.

In a 17-4 stretch to start the contest, Albrecht got one bucket via a rebound and putback. Another field goal came on a fast-break dunk and Albrecht also fed teammate Elijah Glissmeyer on a pair of other baskets.

Albrecht ended the game with 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and a pair of blocked shots.

"This is his third year as a varsity starter. He's got a lot stronger this year, a lot more athletic," Barker said. "In the past, he couldn't get a rebound and then just go with it. Now he's doing that. He's really kind of a secret ingredient to our team, because he also plays such good defense — he can play any position on the floor."

Another senior for Alta who showed similar ability to play inside and out was point guard Trevor Hill, as he also tallied 18 points and cleared a dozen rebounds.

But it was the shooting of guard Zach Rollins that gave the Hawks some breathing room when Davis made its one real run at the hosts.

The Darts, led by 16 points from Jesse Wade and 15 more from Matt Morrell, closed the margin to two points when Morrell hit a bucket with 3:22 left in the first half. But Rollins immediately canned a 3-pointer and, following a quick backcourt turnover, Alta got another bucket from Chris Roberts to put the score at 29-22.

Then Rollins, who finished with 14, drilled two more treys before intermission as the lead grew back to 13.

"Zach's a real good shooter, but I'm also real proud of his defense," the Alta coach said of Rollins. "That's something he's worked really hard on." —
