Kate Cusick’s victory came at a cost — two cellphone batteries.
Her brother Taylor live-streamed the Class 4A No. 1 singles title match against Judge Memorial’s Katie Iwasaki to Cusick’s parents in Florida.

The Timpview sophomore stoically fought throughout the match with a powerful service and forehand. It wasn’t until the final point that Cusick showed emotion.
Cusick fell into her brother’s arms and her eyes welled as they relayed the news that Cusick had won a state championship. She waved at the phone right as her teammates mauled her.
"I felt like my parents were with me out there," Cusick said. "The energy was incredible throughout the entire match."
The sophomore won 6-2, 6-2.
"Katie is such a powerful player, a great competitor," Cusick said. "It took a lot to win this match. It was nice to go out on a high note."
Cusick’s victory secured the team title for the Thunderbirds.
East’s Ruby Parkin was near perfect in her victory over Bountiful’s Hailey Daniels (6-3, 6-4). Parkin made key returns in her first singles title, which came at No. 2. As a freshman and junior, Parkin earned top honors in No. 2 doubles. She braved it alone on the court in her final season.
"Against Hailey, the only thing you can do is stay positive and hit it strong in between the lines," Parkin said. "What a way to put a cherry on top of my time [at East]."
Megan Bell and Haleigh Downing of Olympus grinded out a state title over Springville’s sister pair of Baylee and Olivia Park (6-1, 6-4) at No. 1 doubles.
"I am so excited, this just doesn’t feel real," Downing said. "We were able to fight through the ups and downs of the match and get the win."
Bell complimented the team’s opposition.
"The Park sisters played so well," Bell said. "They’re strong and will definitely be back."
