Prep football: Brighton runs over Alta 38-28
Cottonwood Heights • They did jumping jacks in the shadow of the massive Tiger mural at the base of Brighton High School. They counted off the school name with each jump and ended the chant emphatically "Beat Bingham!" because that's who's up next.
Senior offensive lineman Kai Harmer kissed the concrete, and the Bengals hollered.
The Bengals are 6-0 for the first time since 2004. They beat Region 3 rival Alta 38-28 on Friday night for the first time in four seasons.
Things are looking up for the guys in orange and blue.
"It's really a big deal for us," Brighton senior linebacker Sage Nelson said. "For us, we've been thinking about this game the whole season."
You could tell.
On the legs of a phenomenal performance by star Osa Masina and the Bengal offensive line, Brighton's big-play ability was on full display.
Masina's 242 yards rushing and four touchdowns wowed those in attendance, runs in which he shot through holes created by the offensive line and outran pursuing Alta defenders.
First came a 31-yard burst through the line on the fourth play of the game.
Then came a 67-yard touchdown in which he went untouched minutes later.
He added a touchdown seconds before halftime, then capped his performance with a fourth-down sack of Alta quarterback Chipper Lucero, which he immediately followed with a 76-yard touchdown run.
"Our goal is to establish that our run game was here," Masina said.
It certainly was.
Brighton coach Ryan Bullett said the Alta defense was keying on the fullback dive, so he figured he'd make the Hawks defend the next best thing:
Brighton's best player, Osa Masina.
"Our kids are playing really hard, they're playing with a lot of confidence, a lot of passion right now and they were excited all week to play Alta," Bullett said.
The looming showdown with the Miners in South Jordan is six days away, but the Bengals proved their ground game shouldn't be underestimated.
"They make it look easy, as I said," Masina said about his blockers. "That's not all me. That's all five of those guys and a fullback."
