Prep Football: Herriman rushes past Lone Peak

Highland • Why would Herriman attempt another pass the rest of the season?

Pass plays in the future just might require a second opinion considering the way the Mustangs ran the ball Friday night in a 29-21 road victory against Lone Peak in the Region 4 opener.

Herriman (2-2) ran for 341 yards and did not complete a pass.

Second-and-15? Sweep to the left.

Third-and-9? Draw up the middle.

Herriman ran 47 times on 52 offensive plays and got a timely burst by speedster Brandon Farmer as it clung to a late lead.

The senior broke loose and went 57 yards for a touchdown with 2 minutes, 33 seconds to play on a third-and-3 play with Lone Peak desperate for a stop.

"Props to the O-line and fullbacks — they did a fantastic job," said Farmer, who finished with 242 yards and two touchdowns. "None of the credit goes to me."

Some of the credit goes to junior Kody Jarvis, who was carried off the field with a sprained ankle early in the third quarter, but he came back and returned an interception 95 yards for a touchdown about 9 minutes later.

"I got tangled up a little bit when I was running the ball," said Jarvis, who also scored a rushing touchdown. "I decided to tape it back up and go back out there."

Herriman coach Dustin Pearce said Jarvis' injury probably should have kept him on the sidelines.

"You have to drag him off the field before he'll come off," Pearce said. "That's what we preach — tough, physical guys."

Lone Peak's Baron Gajkowski threw touchdown passes of 15 and 13 yards to Dylan Murdock, and he ran for 125 yards and a touchdown.

In lieu of completed passes, Herriman runs for 341 yards in victory.
