Clearfield • It looked like Clearfield would have to settle for the tie Tuesday.
The Falcons pressured Bountiful from the opening whistle to the closing seconds in the Region 6 girls' soccer matchup, but freshman Amber Marshall never stopped attacking.
Marshall took a cross from Amaris Nunez and rocketed a shot toward the goal in the 101st minute. Braves keeper Charity Cole knocked down the blast, but Marshall followed through and pushed the ball in with her right foot for the 1-0 victory.
"It felt like it was in slow motion, everything stopped and I didn't think I could even get there," Marshall said. "I've always dreamed of having the winning goal."
Marshall, who had scored once this season before Tuesday's game, led the Falcons' charge with sharp passing and an effective somersault throw-in that resulted in near-miss shots on goal.
The double-overtime matchup was a battle of possession. Clearfield maintained pressure on Bountiful the entire game by using wide, easy passing and strong communication during heated contested balls.
"They dominated throughout the entire game," Clearfield coach Lauren Clifford said. "You can tell on their faces that they had the focus to finish this. To come away with the tie would have been disappointing."
Goalkeeper McKenna Sill was perfect between the pipes for Clearfield. She made seven stops and directed her defense throughout the game. The sophomore, who earned her fourth shutout of the season, credited her fullbacks for halting the Braves' offense.
"I know that I can always count on them for being there for me," Sill said. "They make the stops in front and work really hard."
Sill credited her team's conditioning as the difference in the second overtime. Countless hours of wind sprints paid dividends when Marshall scored the winning goal as time expired.
"We just scored in double overtime against Bountiful and we're first in region," Sill said with a smile. "We're on top of the world."
