Prep football: Jordan tumbles at Cathedral Catholic
San Diego • Jordan quarterback Austin Kafentzis threw two interceptions and the Beetdiggers scored just once Friday in a 38-6 loss at Cathedral Catholic.
On Jordan's first drive, Kafentzis overthrew junior wide receiver Nathan Mower, who jumped and reached high for the ball. A Cathedral Catholic defensive back hit Mower hard in the chest, crumpling the receiver to the ground where he stayed for several minutes.
It was a sign of things to come.
The Jordan receivers dropped a multitude of passes, the Dons played much more physically and the Diggers' new offensive line looked overmatched most of the night.
Kafentzis found little room to run and even less success through the air, where he threw two first-half interceptions to Cathedral's Sam Tapia.
Tapia returned the first interception to the 1-yard-line, and Cathedral quarterback Clayton Dale hit tight end Daniel Plum for a touchdown pass three plays later to put the home team up 21-0.
Jordan cut the lead to 21-6 with an 80-yard touchdown drive on its next possession. Clayton Moss ran 6 yards for the score, but the extra point was no good.
The Beetdiggers got the ball back with less than two minutes to play in the half and a chance to pull within a touchdown. But Kafentzis threw the ball straight to Tapia on second down for his second interception of the game.
Cathedral Catholic scored again eight plays later with just 1.3 seconds left in the half to take a 28-6 halftime lead.
The Jordan defense made two straight stops to open the third quarter, and the Diggers looked to have life following halftime.
Midway through the quarter the offense advanced the ball inside the Cathedral 10-yard line and looked ready to punch in the ball, but Kafentzis had his helmet knocked off on a run and had to come out of the game for one play. On the very next play, backup quarterback Andrew Lisk handed to Moss, who was hit and fumbled at the 5-yard line.
Cathedral recovered, marched 90 yards and put the game out of reach with its third rushing touchdown of the game.
