Prep football two-a-days: Altamont
This is an archived article that was published on sltrib.com in 2013, and information in the article may be outdated. It is provided only for personal research purposes and may not be reprinted.

Altamont will cross state lines twice this season, once to Wyoming and once to Nevada, to help fill its regular-season schedule.

But trips like that as well as regular cross-state trips to play similar-sized opponents are the travails of Class 1A football.

Another is the necessity of playing a bunch of young players.

One of those times for the Longhorns was last season, and new coach Anthony Wilcox is hoping his still-young squad will benefit from having players exposed to regular gridiron action so early in their high school career.

"The kids we have do have potential, so I'm excited," Wilcox said.

Altamont actually could be seen as turning a corner midseason a year ago with four returning starters for this season. After losing five of their first six games last year, the Longhorns rebounded to win four of their next five before falling to Rich in the state semifinals.

Many of those players are now juniors, but a couple of seniors will be key as well. Dylan Lindsay, a wide receiver in 2012, will move to quarterback, while fellow senior Tony Brown is an experienced cog on the offensive line and at defensive end.

As for those juniors, Rylee Foy can play both tight end and running back while also a stopper defensively at middle linebacker. When Foy isn't being handed the ball, juniors Slaton Thompson and Brady Farnsworth also will be given plenty of opportunities to churn out yardage.

Wilcox will take over after one year as an assistant coach in Altamont. He is hoping his squad can advance again to the 1A final four — or better.

"That's our expectations," he said. "We want to go deep. They have the potential physically, they just need to progress mentally." —
