Prep baseball: Trujillo savors Layton's turnaround
There was no reasonable evidence to expect that Layton High School could win 20 games and play for the Class 5A state championship this season.
After all who would have given the Lancers any chance of going 8-2 in Region 1 and playing Bingham for the state title based on their 10-14 record last year or the fact that Layton was a one-win team two years ago?
One person who believed was Layton senior Jade Trujillo.
Trujillo just happened to be one of several players the Lancers leaned on to help with the turnaround.
He was 6-0 with a 2.58 ERA and proved valuable as a starter and a reliever this season. He also hit .370 and played first base and outfield when he wasn't pitching.
"He made quality pitches when he needed to," Layton coach Robert Ferneau said. "He would never give in to anybody. We knew a couple years ago this was going to be a process. We worked hard in the weight room, we worked out in the mornings and the kids bought into what we were selling. It's not about one individual, it's about all of us. Jaden was one of several members of our team who had an outstanding year."
Trjuillo started pitching for Layton as a freshman. He got a win over Granger during his sophomore campaign, the only win the team had all season. But Trujillo still believed that with hard work that Layton could build something great.
"I think our success came down to our team being so united," he said. "We didn't care who got the win or the save or who hit the home run, and that's what really what got us through the year. It's been bittersweet. Our goal was to win state, but even though we lost to Bingham in the championship game, we were picked fifth in our region and we ended up being co-region champs with Syracuse."
Now that his high school baseball career is over, Trujillo is prepared to move on with his life. He will leave to serve an LDS church mission in July but not without the satisfaction of knowing he was part of a team that did something few others believed possible.
