4A softball: Provo rallies past Mountain Crest
Taylorsville • Four early errors and a two-run deficit can be tough for teams to overcome.
It's nothing big for the Provo softball team.
The Bulldogs persevered through their early struggles to down Mountain Crest 6-3 in a Class 4A state playoff game Tuesday.
McKenzie Corless and Victoria Van Quill both homered to highlight a four-run fourth-inning rally to help the Bulldogs advance.
"We're a strong team," Provo pitcher Taylor Allman said. "We've come back from a lot of tough things. We bounce back well. If we stay positive throughout the whole game, we'll be fine. We had a tough preseason, but once we got rolling, I definitely thought we'd make it at least this far."
In fact, Provo (21-7) started the season 0-5 before winning 13 consecutive games. The Bulldogs have won 21 of their last 23 games.
"That's been our M.O. lately," Provo coach Jose Ventura said. "We make some freshman errors and somehow put it together. These kids are used to each other. When someone makes a mistake, they put a hand on their shoulder and get over it. They don't let anything get them down."
Mountain Crest (18-9) led 2-0 in the second inning after scoring both runs on errors. The Bulldogs committed four errors through the first three innings before taking the lead for good in the fourth. Corless drilled a three-run homer, and Van Quill followed one batter later with a solo shot.
"We have a lineup that can change a game at any time," Ventura said. "I never expected us to be this far. ... Now our goal is to go as far as we can."
Provo made it 6-2 in the seventh on Allman's single, and another run scored when a fly ball that was dropped in right field.
However, the Mustangs made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh. Jori Hansen, McKenzie Anderson and Perri Eck each singled to load the bases with two outs. Ashley Murray walked to bring in a run, but Allman, who struck out seven, induced a harmless line out to end the game and seal the victory.
The Mustangs stranded 10 base runners.
