Prep girls' track: Davis senior focuses on redemption
Provo • Davis senior Christine Van Brocklin was considered one of the favorites to win the 100-meter hurdles final.
But after a mishap during the qualifying round Friday at the state track meet, she won't be one of the nine girls chasing first place Saturday.
She hit a hurdle with her lead leg during her preliminary heat, knocking it over and throwing off her timing. She said she did her best to keep going and aim for a qualifying spot, but she knew her mistake had cost her, and she crossed the finish line with tears in her eyes.
"I've looked forward to, as a senior, to hopefully win [the 100 hurdles]," she said. "I've worked really hard for it this year, but sometimes things like that happen, and you can't change them."
Van Brocklin was highly motivated to end her senior year on top of the podium after a fourth-place finish last year. But even though she won't get the chance to do it in the 100, she still has a shot at redemption in the 300 hurdles, where she finished third last year and won her qualifying heat Friday.
The 300 hurdles is her favorite event, and because she didn't qualify for the 100 final, she said it is even more important to not let that affect her.
"Why not just give everything you have to the other races?" she said. "Now that I have that gone, it'll make me even more tough. ⦠I'm excited, and I hope to get a new personal record and hopefully take the title."
The star of the early morning was Ogden junior Sarah Feeny.
She set a Class 3A state record in the first event of the day when she finished the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 50.04 seconds. She shattered the old record of 4:53.06, which she set earlier this season.
In the 400 relays, two teams that took first place last year are well on their way to making it two in a row. Cedar City, which won last year with a time of 50.02 in 3A, improved this year with a 49.19 to earn the top spot for Saturday's final.
Orem did the same thing in the 4A competition, besting last year's winning time of 49.26 with a 49.08 in the preliminary heat to also earn the top spot in the final.
