3A boys' soccer: Ogden defense stonewalls Pine View
Ogden • The Ogden boys' soccer team entered Saturday's opening round of the Class 3A state playoffs with an impressive record, to be sure.
But the host Tigers insisted that Pine View was a team not to be overestimated.
That was not an uninformed opinion.
Pine View, which finished third in Region 9, gave Region 11 champ Ogden all it could handle before the Tigers prevailed 1-0.
"Coming in, we knew it was going to be close," Ogden coach Sterling Castle said. "Pine View is a great team. I mean, they come out of a tough region. The one and two seeds ahead of them, they beat both of them.
"I don't think we beat them in the work-rate department, I think we matched it. But we had trouble keeping up with their intensity. Luckily, we finished one, and our keeper [Auggie Garcia] made some great saves."
The one scoring chance that Ogden (14-1-1) finished came in the 55th minute when junior Diego Diaz scored off a pass from teammate Josue Valtierra.
"Josue had the ball on the side, and I said, 'Hey, pass it here,'" Diaz said. "And didn't think at that second with the people in front of me, but it was awesome. I didn't see the ball go in. I said, 'What happened?'"
"They put a lot of high pressure on us the whole day, and we didn't have any time on the ball," Castle said. "We had to play quickly. Diego came in the play with Roque [Ceja] and Josue, he got a little bit of space, and he finished."
Pine View (10-5-1), which had gone 6-0-1 over its last seven games leading into the playoffs, did have a couple of good opportunities to put in a goal of its own.
Garcia was drawn out of the net and caught in no-man's land when Panthers' forward Michael Wade went by the Ogden keeper with the ball with less than 10 minutes to play. But the Tigers defenders quickly swarmed and prevented Wade and Pine View's Daniel Arellano from getting a solid look at the empty goal.
"It was a fight," Pine View coach Sam Johnston said. "I think every single position on the field, no matter where the ball went, I don't think anybody had space anywhere. Both teams were just battling each other for the whole game. We were right down there a couple of times. We hit the post one time and there was that little scrum there."
