Prep baseball: White delivers Riverton past Lone Peak
Riverton • All you need to know about Riverton's Jared White could be learned in the sixth inning of Friday afternoon's baseball game against Lone Peak.
White promptly struck out the side with runners on first and third then put an exclamation point on his performance by hitting a home run in the bottom half of the inning.
Good night and please drive safely.
White went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double and pitched six strong innings to help Riverton beat Lone Peak 8-2 and complete a three-game sweep of the Knights.
"His pitch count was getting high, and we were trying to decide if we need to come with another guy," Riverton coach Jay Applegate said. "And all of the sudden his demeanor changed on the mound and he stepped it up. Lone Peak is a really solid team. We finally got a sweep in this region, so it's a small step for us. But we're going in the right direction."
Riverton took a 5-2 lead into the sixth inning, but Lone Peak wasn't done yet. Casey Lundquist drew a leadoff walk, and Grant Lyman followed with a single to bring the tying run to the plate.
White then caught Lone Peak's second, third and fourth hitter looking at strikes to end the inning.
"I just dialed in and knew I had to get a zero for my team to get the momentum for that last inning, so I had to shut them down," White said.
The Silverwolves rode the momentum to the bottom half of the inning to put away the game.
Logan Coates doubled and Tanner Draper then took Lone Peak starter Tanner Norton deep for a two-run homer. White capped the inning with a solo shot that put away the game.
White struck out 11 and gave up seven hits over his six innings. He ran into trouble in the fourth inning when he drilled Tanner Smith with two outs.
He then struck out Chandler Goeckeritz on a 59-foot curveball that got past catcher Joe Barlow. Lundquist followed with a single, and White then walked the next two batters to load the bases. But he got Hunter Trowbridge to ground out to end the inning.
