Prep softball: Hunter rides hot bats to rout of East

Hunter's Britney Vigil had a smile on her face from ear to ear. Her coach, Wes Haymone, did too.

Vigil and her teammates executed what a coach dreams about Wednesday afternoon, which resulted in a 21-2 rout of the host East softball team that was called after four innings due to the mercy rule.

The Wolverines did everything right.

They hit. They fielded. They stole bases. They picked off runners. Oh, and they hit some more.

"I was very pleased with our pitching performance in the circle," Haymone said. "We played good, solid defense. The bats were alive today."

The Wolverines smacked 12 hits and took advantage of four errors to open up an eight-run lead after two innings.

"These kids are taught that if someone makes an error, that gives us another at bat," Haymone said. "Especially if it's the third out. We try to take advantage of that and produce offense because of the error."

Hunter easily took advantage. Caitlin Pehrson had three doubles, Bailey Vigil clobbered a two-run homer and East walked in two Hunter runs to keep the scoreboard operator busy.

"We all did our part today," Vigil said. "We hit very well. Our defense was strong. We played really well." —
