Prep softball: Taylorsville routs West in 4 innings
Taylorsville • A look at the official scorecard from Taylorsville 15-0 victory over West yields an incomplete record of the game.
The penciled card has Taylorsville hitting through the lineup twice with a pair of home runs, nine doubles and a triple. Every Warrior hit safely and crossed the plate with smart baserunning.
They recorded six stolen bases.
It shows Aseneca Lesuna filling in for Cami Mathews on the mound and pitching efficiently, striking out two and giving up only two walks and a hit.
While there are columns for balls and strikes on the scorecard, there is no place to report the confidence Taylorsville brought to the plate for every at-bat. Coach Rich Kaelin credits his team for maintaining its focus in the four-inning affair.
"Discipline at the plate," coach Rich Kaelin said. "They weren't overanxious and because of it, we hit the ball on the money."
Defensively, shortstop Karlee Jensen made a daring double play in the second, snagging a line drive and throwing out the retreating West runner. Kaelin was impressed with the energy and focus from Louisiana Tech-committed Jensen.
"Sometimes you're afraid that they become passive, but she cares more than ever," Kaelin said. "It's nice to see it that's why she's a leader."
Maddie Cushing hit a first-inning home run and a triple in the second. She hoped that Taylorsville treats Thursday's victory as a lesson in maintaining focus through regional play.
"Games like this teach you to come together," Cushing said. "You can't sit back and hope to keep your focus you got to do what you do to win."
Jensen was pleased with her teammates' performances. She acknowledged that losing by the run-rule is discouraging but knows that the good teams come back from a tough loss.
"I'd tell them [West] that they played a good game and focus on the next step," Jensen said. "Learn from what happened, put it behind you and come out stronger for the next one."
