Prep baseball: Murray rallies past Wasatch
Murray • Bo Shipley didn't care how the game looked as long as the Spartans got the win.
The hulking third baseman knew that hosting Wasatch on Thursday was going to be a challenge. He just didn't know what lengths his team would have to go through for the 10-9 win.
Murray spotted the Wasps five runs in the first when Wasatch's bats came alive. It started to look as if a blowout was brewing until Murray's catcher smothered the plate for the final out with a dagger thrown from second baseman Nick Smart.
"It was an ugly win but we'll take it," Shipley said. "Any win we can get is good right now."
It took Court Adams and Cam Howe's doubles to get the Spartans on the board. Murray settled into the game using timely hitting and smart baserunning.
The Spartans' pitching calmed down and took control starting in the second, holding the Wasps scoreless for the next four innings. Pitchers McKade Jangard and Spencer Downs combined for six strikeouts and only four walks.
Shipley credited Downs for coming into relief and keeping Wasatch at bay.
"He stepped up he came up big," Shipley said. "He was a big contribution to this win."
Shipley tied the game in the third with a leadoff home run. Sitting on an 0-2 count, he choked up and took it over the right-center wall.
Wasatch got back into the game, scoring three in the sixth and then the go-ahead run in the seventh. Playing small ball, the Wasps bunted Todd Ogilivie into position and Casey Peterson was able to hit him home.
"They knew what they were doing," Downs said. "You had to be careful not to leave anything hanging in front of them to hit."
In the bottom of the seventh, Murray worked pitch counts and drew two walks. With Chase Topham beating a suicide squeeze and Justin Adams driving in the winning run, the Spartans improved to a 4-0 record.
"Man, that was a nail-biter!" Downs finished off with a laugh. "I'm glad we got out of that one."
