Prep basketball: Emery earns state honor

Lone Peak senior Nick Emery earned recognition for helping lead the Knights to the Class 5A state boys' basketball championship.

Emery recently was named the Gatorade Utah boys' basketball player of the year.

Emery, who plans to play at BYU after serving an LDS mission, averaged 17.9 points and 3.8 rebounds. He added 3.6 assists and 2.8 steals.

The Knights finished 26-1 and ranked No. 1 in the nation by maxpreps.com.

Emery completed the sweep for Utah County players. Springville senior Malia Nawahine was named the Gatorade Utah girls' basketball player of the year earlier this month.

Nawahine helped lead the Red Devils to the Class 4A state title by averaging 18.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.3 steals. Springville finised the season 25-0.

Arthur leads Griffins

Bingham High graduate Jake Arthur leads the Westminster men's lacrosse team in goals this season.

Arthur, a senior, has found the back of the 31 times in 12 games. His high was six against Montana State on Saturday.

Locals help propel Utes

Bingham High grad Chalese Fankhauser and Riverton High Trina Gomez are among the leading batters for the University of Utah softball team.

Fankhauser, a junior outfielder, sports a .288 batting average and has knocked in five runs. She has four doubles, two triples and a homer in 27 games, all starts.

Gomez, a junior outfielder, is batting .333 in 24 games, including eight starts.
