Taylorsville • With only one game on its schedule this week, the Riverton baseball team planned ahead to make sure more than one pitcher got some work Tuesday.
So starter Jared Barton left the mound after three innings of solid work en route to the Silverwolves’ 11-2 win over Taylorsville.

Enter senior Tanner Draper, who worked the final four frames, and out came the radar guns. Several scouts were on hand apparently for the express purpose of checking out Draper, who will play at Oregon State next year unless professional baseball beckons.
"It was planned ahead. We were going to have him [Barton] throw three and then have Tanner come in and get some work," Riverton coach Jay Applegate said. "Part of the reason we wanted him to come in this game is that there were people here to see him — quite a few people."
Draper, like Barton, did just fine against the host Warriors. He struck out four and allowed only a single run on a Jake Greenberg RBI double in the fourth over his four frames.
As for Barton, his control and effective change of speeds kept the Taylorsville (4-1) bats under wraps.
"For the most part, he did real well," Applegate said. "A couple of times he fell behind hitters, but he was able to refocus and that got us out of some innings."
Riverton (4-0) tied things in an instant after entering the second inning down 1-0. Jared White unloaded for a home run to left on Warriors hurler Zac Stepp’s first pitch of the inning. Stepp, who was plagued with control problems after the first inning, gave up another run in the second, then four more in the third.
Riverton’s big hit in its four-run third inning came when catcher Joe Barlow drove a double to left-center to drive in two.
A triple by Trevor Peterson to start the fourth, along with a double by Cam Gust, helped give the Silverwolves some insurance.

"We’re not very happy about our performance obviously, but they were a lot better team than we were today," Taylorsville coach Jake Brown said. "They outplayed us and outcoached us in just about every aspect. We weren’t really ready for it."
