Brighton dispatched pesky Pleasant Grove, 70-55, Monday night in the first round of the Class 5A boys’ state tournament. The Bengals did it with 18 fast-break points and some inside scoring from senior forward Travis Devashrayee, who had a game-high 21 points.
"It was a good way to start," said Devashrayee, who scored 12 points in the second half. "I could just feel it. I knew I was going to shoot all right. If I had an open shot, I was going to take it."
Devashrayee grabbed 10 rebounds, many off errant shots by senior guard Brandon Miller, who scored 20 points despite shooting just 6 for 17 from the field. The Bengals scored seven points in the first quarter, but posted 30 in the final period.
Brighton (19-5), last year’s 5A runner-up, advances to meet Viewmont in Wednesday’s quarterfinal round.
"We’re a good team," Miller said. "It’s big when I can have an off night like I did tonight and it doesn’t faze our team. We can all play, so I’m never worried if I have an off night."
With point guard Zach Bernardo pushing the tempo at every opportunity, the Bengals ran off points in bunches. A 10-3 run closed the first half, and an 8-2 run gave them breathing room after Pleasant Grove (14-10) had closed to within two points in the third quarter.
A 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter that included one of Devashrayee’s two 3-pointers put Brighton up comfortably at 49-33.
"They came out and threw a 1-3-1 trap at on us, which took us a little off guard," Brighton coach Jeff Gardner said. "We only had one turnover in the first half, which was a big key for us to build a lead even though we didn’t shoot the ball very well."
