Taylorsville • The Springville Red Devils embraced one another in front of their bench, celebrating a game that felt like a championship.

At the end of a back-and-forth game, the Devils had emerged as the only undefeated girls’ basketball team in Class 4A, having downed the Bonneville Lakers 50-43.

But the time to celebrate was brief.

"It means nothing if we don’t take care of business tomorrow," coach Nancy Warner said.

Springville entered Friday’s game at Bruin Arena a perfect 22-0. The Lakers also were unbeaten, having won 23 games in a row.

But the bracket matched up the two top teams in the semis, not the finals.

"The intensity was definitely championship-caliber," Springville point guard Savannah Park said. "But we have to get the job done tomorrow. We have to look past this one."

Park and Malia Nawahine helped the Devils double the Lakers in the first quarter. Nawahine finished with a game-high 16 points.

"She played out there like a leader and our captain," Warner said. "That’s really where it all starts with us."

But the Lakers, who started slow in Thursday’s quarterfinal matchup with Hillcrest, eventually would get going. Sparked by guard Montana Perkins coming off the bench, Bonneville put together a 9-0 run to tie the game midway through the second quarter.

Springville opened the third on a 7-0 run, only to be countered by another 9-0 Lakers run.

Bonneville star Emilie Volk finished with 11 points after a quiet first half.

In the end, however, Springville was just too much.

"It’s a game of momentum and when the other team has it, you’ve got to get it back," Warner said.

Nawahine broke up an inbounds pass. Park hit free throws for two of her 14 points.

Bonneville struggled to match the Devils in the final period. A pass to a trailing Volk found her still in the backcourt. Cortney Porter, who scored a team-high 13 points, missed a straightaway 3-pointer. The Lakers fouled, and the Devils hit their free throws. Park called the atmosphere "surreal."

"It was like a championship game," she said. "But it’s over now."
