Kaysville • The Davis boys’ basketball team made clear in the opening minutes that it was looking to play a physical game against Alta.
Given what the Hawks had done to the Darts last year, it was no wonder why.
Davis 62, Alta 53Davis avenged a postseason loss from last year, led by Jesse Wade’s 17 points.
The Darts took a bruising 62-53 win over Alta on Tuesday at Davis to avenge a pair of losses to the Hawks last year, including one that knocked them out in the first round of the state playoffs.
"We really wanted this one," Davis guard Zac Fuller said. "The first time we played them [last year], they really handed it to us. I thought it was good for us to come out, start strong and finish strong."
The Darts took control of the game by playing suffocating defense in the second quarter. Alta scored just six points in the period, enabling the Darts to take a 10-point lead into halftime that they never surrendered.
Fuller said that leading up to the game, the Darts focused on stopping the Hawks’ middle penetration, and they were able to execute the game plan.
"That was the big thing that kind of held them," Fuller said.
On the offensive end, the Darts spread the ball around, as four players scored in double digits, including Jesse Wade, who led the team with 17 points.
"I have confidence in everyone on the court," said Fuller, who had 14 points. "I know that one of us will work to get each other open. I feel like we’re not all about ourselves."
Carter Heslop kept the Hawks in the game in the first half, scoring eight of his 16 points in the first quarter, when the rest of his team was cold from the field.
It was Davis’ second straight impressive win to start the season. The Darts beat Riverton on the road to open the year, but the win over the Hawks is the one they’ll savor.
"They’re a tough team," said Cole Hally, who scored 14 for the Darts. "I mean, they knocked us out twice last year by 20-plus. We always had something against them. It’s a good rivalry. We came out with energy."
