5A football: Syracuse QB out for season

The Syracuse football team is preparing to make a return to the Class 5A semifinals at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Thursday, but the postseason excitement has been tempered by the news that the team's quarterback will not be able to play.

Senior Brock Anderson has a torn ACL, suffered in the fourth quarter of the Titans' 31-24 win against Alta on Friday. The team had hoped that it was just a severe sprain, but its fears were confirmed Monday after their star quarterback had a medical evaluation.

Kelly Anderson, Syracuse's athletic director and the senior's father, confirmed that his son likely would have surgery Thursday, when the Titans play Bingham for a berth in the title game.

Brock Anderson was a revelation as a passer this year, completing nearly 69 percent of his attempts while throwing for 1,850 yards and 25 touchdowns against only four interceptions. Anderson also was the team's kicker, booting seven field goals this year. He also was effective on the ground, running for nearly 400 yards and six touchdowns.

While his high school career is over, Anderson could get a chance to play in college, possibly as a kicker.

Spencer Johnson, the only other player to complete passes for Syracuse this year, is the likely starter at quarterback.
