5A football: Syracuse hopes QB can play vs. Bingham
Syracuse hopes to find out for sure Monday if it will be without its senior quarterback for the Class 5A state football semifinals Thursday.
Brock Anderson, who crumpled to the turf in pain while dropping back to pass against Alta in Friday's quarterfinal win, hasn't given up hope of playing, his coach said.
"It's really up in the air," Syracuse coach Russ Jones said.
Jones said Anderson planned to visit an orthopedist and undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury. The Titans will face Bingham (10-2) at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rice-Eccles Stadium with a trip to the state title game on the line.
Anderson, who also serves as the Titans' kicker, was carted off the field with his lower right leg wrapped during the fourth quarter Friday. He's helped the Titans roll into Thursday's semifinal at 11-0, but his uncertain status presents a problem.
"I think we just got to look at our backup," Jones said.
The Titans are looking at Spencer Johnson and Kole Tracy as possible fill-ins.
The question mark at quarterback isn't affecting Bingham's preparation.
"We just plan on him being there," Miners coach Dave Peck said. "I hope he can play."
Whether Anderson plays or not, the Titans' offense will face a significant challenge. The Miners' defense has shut out three of its last five opponents.
"Our defense is right up there with the best we've ever had at Bingham," Peck said.
It's a defense with its share of Division I talent, including Drake Miller (Hawaii), Miles Durrant (Boise State) and Lowell Lotulelei (undecided).
"I feel good about our schemes and what we're trying to do," Peck said.
Syracuse's defense also has been stingy, and Jones challenged his unit after Friday's game to increase its intensity to help compensate for Anderson's injury. The Titans only are allowing 8.5 points per game, which likely means Thursday's game will be a slugfest between two stout defenses.
"I think we're just excited about it," Jones said. "They're all just optimistic."
