Sandy • Callie Stewart knew her cross would find a home.

Stewart sent the ball across the goal, where Meghan McKenna was able to finish in the 56th minute Friday. McKenna used her left foot to drill the ball into the back of the net before getting mobbed by her teammates.

"I've never been under a dog pile before," McKenna said. "It was such a good feeling."

Snow Canyon downed Wasatch 1-0 in the Class 3A semifinals to advance to its first soccer championship in school history. The Warriors relied on a balance of defense, led by keeper Grace Walton, and the offensive front captained by McKenna.

"Everyone did their job," Snow Canyon coach Kenny Kunde said. "Our defense was really hustling and was able to make plays."

Stewart was struck in the face by a ball early in the first half, which forced her to the sidelines. As the senior's eye was receiving treatment, she was determined to get back into the game.

"They were going to have to take this game away from me," Stewart said. "All I wanted to do was to get back in there."

She led the charge for the Warriors after her return. She sent multiple crosses in front of the net, but Wasatch keeper Rebecca Mawhinney and the Wasps turned them aside. Mawhinney finished with seven saves.

Stewart finally was able to connect with her teammates midway through the second half.

"We've practiced all season on making good runs, and I knew we would finally be able to finish," Stewart said.

Saturday's state title game against Park City will be McKenna's final game because she doesn't plan on playing in college. She plans to enjoy it.

"This is all I have, one more game," McKenna said. "I'm going to leave everything out there." —
