Draper • Bonneville hadn’t been in this position too often before.
When Woods Cross scored an equalizing goal in the first 10 minutes of the game, it was only the third time the Lakers had allowed a first-half goal.
They were stunned, but not done.
"I think after that, our team knew that we had to bring more intensity," senior goalkeeper Megan Fillpot said. "I think everybody knew what we had to do."
The Lakers took the lead again minutes later on a score by Lexie Stratford, and then Bonneville played its regular game, extending its lead to 3-1 before time ticked out on its Class 4A state semifinal win against Woods Cross on Tuesday afternoon.
Last season, the field at Juan Diego was the end of the line for the Lakers, who fell to Skyline. But this year, Bonneville conquered the Wildcats to head back to Rio Tinto Stadium for Friday’s 4A state championship.
"We planned on it this whole season," Bonneville senior Sienna Thornock said. "From day one, we’ve planned on going back to Rio Tinto, and now we’re seeing it happen."
Thornock was a big part in getting them there by getting the first and last say in the scoring department.
The forward kicked it off by leaping into the box to clean up a rebound in the opening five minutes. She also scored the insurance goal, which she picked up off one of her teammate’s headers and fired into the opposite corner.
The game was tied briefly at one goal apiece for 10 minutes after Amanda Lund booted a long cross that ended up curling into Bonneville’s goal. But Lexie Stratford gave Bonneville the lead again soon after.

"After that first goal, I thought, ‘OK, we’ve got this,’ but we weren’t able to keep it, unfortunately," Bonneville coach Rob McDaniel said. "But we told them to settle down and keep playing."
The second lead held thanks in part to Fillpot, who secured a lot of the loose balls bouncing around near the net. Although the keeper lost a chance at her 12th shutout early, she didn’t waiver.
"She made a few mental mistakes last year, so we spent a lot of time preparing her mentally for this game today," McDaniel said. "She was ready."
Bonneville won the 4A title game in 2010.
