Draper • It wasn't just McKenna Kimber's first goal of the season. It probably will be her biggest.

Viewmont put away Davis on a breakaway from the sophomore in the opening minutes of the second overtime in the 5A state girls' soccer semifinals.

Kimber slipped through Davis' defense and drilled the golden goal to push Viewmont into the state championship game with the 2-1 victory.

"It's always nerve-racking playing Davis," Kimber said. "I'm just glad that we kept our composure today."

Kimber's first varsity goal was the difference in a tough and physical game. Strong winds swept the field, favoring Davis in the first half and helping Viewmont in the second.

Viewmont struck first in the 28th minute off a header from senior Karrie Pead. She burst through a scrum of players at the foot of the goal before drilling the ball into the net off of a well-placed throw-in from Abby Holbrook.

"Karrie always comes through on those scrappy goals," Viewmont coach Emalee Tate said. "She's one of the players that gives 100 percent all of the time."

Davis tied the game in the 42nd minute on a booming kick from junior Emma Farley. The junior boomed a shot from 20 yards out that was aided by the wind, and goalkeeper Ashley Earnshaw misplayed it.

"The wind was a huge factor in this game," Tate said. "It was a testament to their passion, heart and grit to play through it."

Davis was unable to attack past the Viking fullbacks in overtime.

"Our defense was awesome," Earnshaw said. "They play strong and are really organized. I honestly believe they're the best in the state."

The teams combined for 27 penalties, and a yellow card was issued to Viewmont junior Kaitlyn Palmer for a hard tackle.

"With the chance to play for a state title, you have to leave everything on the field," Tate said. —
