4A soccer: Woods Cross downs Hillcrest in overtime
Midvale • Woods Cross sophomore Kyra Fawcett was the hero for the Wildcats so many times during the regular season.
She lived up to that reputation once more Tuesday when she drilled the game-winning goal one minute into overtime to lift Woods Cross to a 2-1 victory over Hillcrest in the first round of the Class 4A girls soccer playoffs.
Fawcett had three or four looks at the goal in regulation, but each shot she took narrowly missed. She had a one-on-one opportunity in second-half stoppage time to find the back of the net, but she collided with the Hillcrest goalkeeper just before making solid contact with the ball. Fawcett was shaken up on the play, but she quickly bounced back.
"When you miss a few, you just have to clear that out of your head and be ready for the next one," Fawcett said. "Once that last one hit the net, all I could feel was relief."
The Wildcats had several opportunities to score that went by the wayside. Those missed chances allowed Hillcrest to take a 1-0 lead on a Hannah Sutherland goal early in the second half. Fawcett's attitude of forgetting the missed opportunities was adopted by the whole team, and Woods Cross recovered.
"We didn't change anything that we were doing," Woods Cross coach David Newman said. "The girls were playing well and we knew that as long as we kept shooting, they would start going in."
Woods Cross tied the game when Ashlyn Farnes deflected in a corner kick with about 25 minutes remaining in the second half. The Wildcats defense shut down the Huskies from there to set the stage for Fawcett's overtime heroics.
The Wildcats will take on fourth-seeded Box Elder on Thursday with the winner moving on to the state semifinals.
Box Elder 4, Maple Mountain 3 (2OT)
Box Elder pulled off the biggest upset of the first round by stunning Maple Mountain in double overtime. The longshot Bees were led by star Lana Willard, who scored three goals in the game, including the game-winner.

The Lakers got goals from four different players to cruise past Orem. Bonneville now has won six straight opening-round playoff game, and it only has dropped five games in the last three years.
Clearfield 1, Olypmus 0
Clearfield played one of its best defensive games of the year to sneak by Olympus in the opening round. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stratton was masterful in her shutout performance.
Timpview 2, Sky View 1
A second-half goal by Kanui Munoz was the difference in an otherwise even game. The Thunderbirds now face a tough second-round game against Bountiful.
Bountiful 5, Herriman 0
The Braves wasted no time putting away Herriman. Bountiful's Jenny Skedros led the charge with two of the team's five goals.
Skyline 3, East 1
Skyline netted two goals early and rode that advantage to victory. East made things interesting by scoring a goal in the final five minutes of the game, but the Eagles held on.
Timpanogos 3, Mountain Crest 0
The Timberwolves took care of business at home by shutting out Mountain Crest. Timpanogos held a 2-0 lead for much of the second half, but Breanna Brown put the icing on the cake with a goal in the waning minutes.
