Prep girls soccer: Fremont, Davis settle for 1-1 tie
Kaysville • They both were playing for more than a victory Tuesday night.
Another victory for Davis would earn the Darts the Region 1 title and top seed in the playoffs.
For Fremont, it would be the respect the team has been striving for all season.
In the end, they both had to settle for a 1-1 tie.
The Silverwolves and Darts attacked each other in a hotly contested game. Davis struck first in the 13th minute when senior McKayla Carter struck the ball from 35 yards out on a set penalty play. It clanged off the sidebar and was ruled a goal, her second of the year.
"She brings that swagger out on the field," Davis coach Soulivanh Phongsavath said. "She expects to win in the big games."
Fremont waited until the 38th minute to tie it. Junior Mariah Elmer chipped it in off an assist from her sister, senior Mikayla Elmer.
"I'm used to people coming after me," said Mariah Elmer, who has scored 22 times this season. "They know that I score most of the goals, so I rely on my teammates to make something happen."
Both teams finished with 16 shots on goal.
"They're a solid, tough and talented group of girls," Fremont coach Tiva Palmer said. "If somebody wants something from us, they're going to fight to take it."
Davis dominated possession in the second half with eight shots on goal and five corner kicks but wasn't able to capitalize.
"We're content with the tie, but we would have loved to have won this game," Carter said. "We all wanted to secure region today."
