Riverton • Almost every football coach not named Mike Leach preaches that there are two keys to winning games — establish the run and play solid defense.

Riverton took that philosophy to a new level in its 41-13 win against Kearns on Thursday.

Riverton got the running game going early and never relented. The Silverwolves handed off the ball off 10 times to eight different ball carriers during their first two drives. The result was 69 yards and two touchdowns — one by junior running back Dallin Munger and one by senior running back B.J. Newman.

Riverton was running with power, but it was quick to snap the ball on every play, which winded the Cougars.

"Half the time, they weren't even lined up yet," Newman said. "Our tempo kicked them in the pants."

Riverton eventually did pass the ball a few times, but not many. There wasn't much need for an air assault because Kearns could do nothing to stop the ground attack. The Silverwolves finished with 388 yards on offense, including 294 on the ground.

Not to be outdone, the Riverton defense punished Kearns for the majority of the contest.

"We are one of the smaller 5A schools, but I like the guys we have and I'm really pleased with the way the defense played," Riverton coach Mike Miller said. "I like our speed, and I like the way we're getting to the ball. We needed that."

Riverton had given up only 94 yards until the final minute of the game. The Silverwolves did not let Kearns pass its own 41-yard line until the fourth quarter.

The Silverwolves were in the driver's seat throughout, which is what they needed after struggling in their previous games.

"We felt like we needed to make a statement," Newman said. "We are who we say we are, and we can compete in this state." —
