Before the game, the players set a goal for 20 pancake blocks. Hit that, and both starters and bench players would be treated to breakfast.
Senior center B.J. Cavender thought he and his teammates cleared that mark, but the official ruling awaits video review. If confirmed, they’ll decide which restaurant suffers the blow.
"Sometimes IHOP, Chuck-a-rama, Chick-fil-A — wherever there’s food," Cavender said. "We’re linemen. We eat."
If opening night was any indication, the Jordan offensive line will be well fed this fall. The group protected quarterback Austin Kafentzis, who was barely touched on his way to five touchdowns — three passing, two rushing.
The sophomore, who MaxPreps named its 2011 National Freshman of the Year, said he felt none of the jitters that followed him through his prep debut.
"I could just tell from last night," Kafentzis said. "Last year … I didn’t get any sleep [the night before]. This year, I got some sleep. It was more comfortable. I wasn’t joking around too much, but I wasn’t over in the corner not socializing with anyone."
Fremont, the 5A runner-up in each of the past two seasons, looked like a playoff outsider against Jordan. The Beetdiggers scored on their first four drives, running out a 27-0 lead within the first 23 minutes.
Senior quarterback/safety Jordan Preator — the Silver Wolves’ most dynamic weapon — spent the first half icing his hamstring on the sideline after spending some of last week’s practices in street clothes. Still, it’s difficult to imagine his presence making up a 41-point deficit.
