First Published May 28 2012 09:24 pm • Last Updated May 29 2012 12:16 am

Timpview High School has hired Cary Whittingham as head coach of the football team, succeeding Louis Wong.

Whittingham, a former BYU standout and brother of Utah football coach Kyle Whittingham, previously served on the Timpview staff as a defensive coach. He helped the team go 10-3 last season on its way to a Class 4A semifinal berth.

Interim superintendent Bob Gentry confirmed that Whittingham had been selected to lead the Thunderbirds, who won four straight state championships from 2006 to 2009 under Wong. Principal Todd McKee was not immediately available for comment.

Whittingham played football at Provo High and BYU as a linebacker. He had a brief stint in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams.

Wong was suspended in March and fired in April after a state audit asserted there were financial improprieties in athletic spending at the school. The Provo City School District posted a job opening for the position on May 3.
