Prep notebook: Snow Canyon on strong run thanks to pitchers
Snow Canyon baseball was expected to have good pitching this year, but the past two weeks have been nuts.
Starters Riley Gates and Ben Rowland have pitched four straight shutouts over Region 9 opponents, putting the Warriors on the fast track to the postseason.
"It's been real exciting those last four games, as far as pitching goes," coach Reed Secrist said, "and we've swung the bats really well to get there."
Snow Canyon is 14-2, thanks in large part to its pitching. Gates was the Class 4A MVP a year ago and is a top college prospect. But Rowland entered the season as the No. 4 starter, Secrist said, and has moved up in the rotation and recently received an offer to play at Dixie State.
Before the run of shutouts began on March 27, Rowland pitched a no-hitter against Springville in a 1-0 win at the Little Caesars Classic.
"I've always known that he's had good stuff," Secrist said, "and finally this year he has the confidence to go with it."
Lone Peak moves ahead in Region 4
The strongest region in Class 5A boys' soccer got a bit clearer this week.
Lone Peak (8-2) topped Lehi (8-1) 2-1 Friday in overtime to take the top spot in Region 4. The Knights broke a 1-1 tie in overtime with a penalty kick by goalkeeper Kaden Killpack after Brody Berry was fouled in the box.
All three goals came on set pieces two penalty kicks and a free kick by Lone Peak in the first half.
"You remove some penalty kicks and some free kicks, and it's a zero-zero match going to double overtime," Lone Peak coach Blaine Hale said.
Lehi had been 5A's last undefeated team.
"It was a good eye-opener for them to realize there are things to work on," coach Jerry Preisendorf said.
Kelson hits for cycle
Not only did Wasatch shortstop Hannah Kelson hit for the cycle in the Wasps' 23-0 win over Union on Friday, she did it in order.
The senior was 5-for-5 in the four-inning game, with two singles in the first inning, a double in the second, a triple in the third and a homer in the fourth.
