Taylorsville • Maple Mountain needed a bit of a wake-up call in its opening-round game against Bountiful, but the Eagles were able to seal the deal to set up a date with Skyline in the quarterfinals.

Going into the fourth quarter, Maple Mountain led by nine points, but Bountiful went on a 13-2 run in the first three minutes of the period to take a one-point lead. Behind the leadership of junior guard Aleksa Gappmayer, the Eagles refocused and took over.

"Once the score got closer, we had to realize that they weren’t just going to let us win it," Gappmayer said. "Playing four quarters is everything."

Maple Mountain coach Cory Green said they started coasting once they had the lead, but they fixed the problem.

"I think our girls got a little complacent — we thought the game was over before it was over," Green said. "Hopefully we won’t let that happen again, and hopefully that will be a learning experience for us."

Gappmayer led all scorers with 21 points. She said the key for the Eagles in the rest of the tournament will be to avoid another letdown, especially on the defensive end.

"Our offense has improved over the years, but defense is our forte," Gappmayer said.
