Taylorsville • The Springville girls’ basketball team wouldn’t be counted out. Even with new players. Even with a fourth seed. Even against the No. 1 team in the state.
The Red Devils showed the defending state champs still have some muscle, stunning top-ranked Cyprus 53-38 in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament Monday at Salt Lake Community College. The victory busted the playoff bracket, opening up the field, and left Springville still in the hunt for a third straight title.

"We freaking played hard," said junior Malia Nawahine, who finished with a game-high 28 points. "I think we don’t get as much credit as we deserve, but we’ve beaten No. 1 teams before. Our team played good today."
Springville led the entire second half, holding the Pirates to only four field goals in the period. Cyprus senior forward Lori Parkinson struggled as well, scoring only three second-half points as the Red Devils locked up the post.
The Pirates’ defense helped keep them in the game, as Springville coughed up some inopportune turnovers in the third quarter. Cyprus would get within four points, but the Red Devils pulled away as Nawahine hit some clutch field goals and the team went 14 for 18 from the line in the fourth quarter.
It was characteristic behavior for a team that has played well on the road in a tough region, coach Nancy Warner said. Springville’s win completed a Region 8 sweep on the day, as Maple Mountain, Timpanogos and Salem Hills all won.
"We knew we could play in this gym, because we’ve played well in those situations this year," she said. "Our region prepared us for this. We had to prepare every single night for tough games."
At first, Cyprus appeared to be the more prepared team. In the first quarter, the Pirates hopped off to a 12-5 lead, and Springville appeared flustered. But Nawahine caught the Devils up with 14 points in the second quarter, giving them a 24-21 halftime lead.
Timpanogos 38, Woods Cross 28 • Riding a 13-point fourth-quarter run, Timpanogos pulled away at the finish for a victory over Woods Cross. The Timberwolves had to weather a 22-point effort from Wildcats center Emily Howey, but their balance and defense eventually won out.

Bonneville 49, Olympus 27 • Bonneville easily outpaced Olympus for a victory, opening up a 23-8 lead by midway through the second quarter.
Skyline 57, Roy 45 • Senior center Miquelle Askew scored a career-high 35 points in the Eagles’ win over Roy. The Eagles led the entire game, although Roy’s pressure and tempo challenged them at times.
Maple Mountain 61, Bountiful 53 • After going down in the fourth quarter to the Braves, Maple Mountain surged to the win with a 20-10 run. Aleksa Gappmayer had a game-high 21 points, and the Golden Eagles went 14 for 16 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
Mountain Crest 60, Hillcrest 35 • The Mustangs never let up on their way to a win over the Huskies. Mountain Crest held Hillcrest to just 12 points in the first half. Senior Karlee Kartchner led Mountain Crest with 21 points.
Salem Hills 71, East 28 • The Skyhawks sailed to an easy win. East had no answer for guard Hailey Ingram, who scored 21 points, or center Lyssa Hanks, who finished with 13 points.
Sky View 56, Westlake 52 • The Bobcats went on a 16-8 run, sealed by Dannika Webb’s late free throws, for the win. Maddie Day had 15 points for Sky View. Westlake’s Shannon Jensen scored 20 points in the loss.
