Pleasant Grove finished the first day of the tournament with a narrow 121.5-110 lead over Viewmont. Nine Pleasant Grove wrestlers are still in contention in the winners’ bracket, while Viewmont has seven remaining.
"For the most part we’ve been wrestling tough," Pleasant Grove coach Brock Moore said. "We’ve had a few that have been a little sluggish, but hopefully they’ll come back and earn some points in the consolation bracket."
The southern Vikings added important wins in the lighter weights, with brothers Kyson and Korbin Levin each pinning their first two opponents. In his first match, Kyson pinned Syracuse’s Brock George in 48 seconds, following that up with a one minute, 11 second pin of Alta’s Zane Rasmussen. His entire tournament so far has been less than two minutes.
"They’re both mentally tough kids," Moore said. "This is what they live for."
Pleasant Grove also got a welcome surprise, as 220-pounder Brandon Dennison turned a close victory into a pin with just two seconds left in his match against West Jordan’s Jacob Ponce.
Viewmont qualified 23 wrestlers for the tournament, the highest of any 5A squad, and is still in the hunt to bring the trophy back home after finishing a disappointing 11th in 2009. The northern Vikings have won seven of the last 10 state titles in 5A.
