Peterson, Yorgason steady for unsteady Granger

It was an up-and-down regular season for the Granger Lancers. After a 6-3 start, they lost eight out of their next 11 games. Senior guard Madison Peterson was second in Class 5A in steals and first in assists going into the final week of the regular season. Caroline Yorgason, also a senior guard, led the team in scoring and was 11th overall in 5A.

Cyprus opens tourney as a favorite

Cyprus clinched the Region 6 title with a 53-37 win over Bountiful on Friday. Three Pirates scored in double figures in the victory. Cyprus opens the state tournament on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Salt Lake Community College. In their first tournament game, the Pirates will be facing off against the No. 4 seed from Region 8. That opponent could be one of three teams. Springville was in the fourth slot coming into the week, but it could potentially be Timpanogos or Timpview. Whoever it happens to be, Cyprus will be the favorite.

Hunter hopes for deep playoff run

After getting blown out by Taylorsville, Hunter bounced back to earn a 5-point win over West on Thursday. The Wolverines had already locked up the second seed in Region 2, but head coach Todd Wood had said they still wanted to end the regular season on a high note. The state tournament gets under way for Hunter on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

Lone Peak awaits Kearns in tourney opener

Kearns punched its ticket to the playoffs with a hard-fought, 39-35 win over Granger on Thursday. The Cougars trailed by 3 points after three quarters, but they held the Lancers to just 1 point in the final period. As the No. 3 seed from Region 2, Kearns is slotted to play Lone Peak in the opening game of the 5A state tournament on Tuesday morning at 9:30.

Stansbury sneaks in with big finish

Stansbury won its final two games of the regular season to finish in a tie for third place in Region 11 with Ogden. The tiebreaker gave the Stallions the No. 3 seed and Ogden the No. 4 seed. In its opening game of the playoffs, Stansbury will take on Juab, the No. 2 seed from Region 12. The first round of the Class 3A tournament is played at the home site of the higher seed, so the Stallions will travel to Juab.

Taylorsville rolls through region, wants more

The preseason was a bit bumpy for Taylorsville, but the same cannot be said of region play. The Warriors walked right through Region 2 in dominating fashion. They had three players averaging more than 11 points per game going into their final region game against Kearns. Entering the week, senior guard Whitney Mitchell was one of seven 5A players averaging at least 15 points per game. By claiming the top seed out of Region 2, the Warriors draw the fourth-place team from Region 4.

Tooele comes up short after making late playoff push

The Tooele Buffaloes were eliminated from playoff contention when they lost to Bear River in the final game of the season. Tooele had won three out of four games going into that game to stay alive in the playoff hunt, but luck ran out. Seniors Becca Smaellie and Lizzie Stewart each finished the season with a scoring average of more than 9 points per game. Stewart finished 11th in Class 5A in steals and assists.

West Jordan gets in, will open against tough opponent

A three-game winning streak late in the season earned West Jordan a spot in the playoffs. The Jaguars started the season slowly, losing their first four games. They then went 8-6 in their next 14 games. Getting into the tournament is great, but there isn’t much time to celebrate because West Jordan has a very tough first-round game against either Layton or Syracuse.
