Provo • In high school football, what happened in August doesn't matter in November.

Timpview learned that lesson Friday night during its Class 4A quarterfinal against Westlake.

The heavily favored Thunderbirds needed a 49-yard touchdown pass from Jake Lloyd to Austin Fullmer with 51 seconds remaining to score a 24-17 victory over the Thunder.

It was a far cry from the second week of the season, when Timpview routed Westlake, 40-9.

"Beating a team twice is difficult," Thunderbird coach Louis Wong said, "because you have to change the mentality of your team. They're thinking, 'Hey, we already beat them.'"

This time, the Thunder nearly beat Timpview.

After the Thunderbirds took a quick 7-0 lead on the first Lloyd-to-Fullmer touchdown pass, Westlake parlayed two mistakes into a 14-7 halftime lead.

A bad snap on a punt led to Daniel Nugent's 4-yard touchdown run with 1:09 left in the first quarter.

Then, 25 seconds into the second quarter, Tyler Diaz returned an interception 75 yards for another score.

"You can only shoot yourself in the foot so long," Wong said. "I don't know how many toes we have left. ... We're hopping on one leg right now."

Timpview rallied in the third quarter and took a 17-14 lead on Tyler Solorzano's 27-yard field goal and Gregson Aspinall's 4-yard touchdown run.

With seven minutes left, however, the Thunderbirds fumbled a punt at midfield. Westlake recovered and moved to the Timpview 24.

When the drive stalled, Stephen Lifferth drilled a 41-yard field goal with 3:01 remaining to tie the game, 17-17.

In the final minute, however, Fullmer was alone on a deep post pattern and Lloyd hit him for the game-winning touchdown.

"It was open once before," Fullmer said, "so we ran it again and we got it. ... This is awesome. It feels great."

Timpview advances to Thursday's 4-A semifinals against East at Rice Eccles Stadium.

Wong knows the Thunderbirds won't survive if they continue to make critical mistakes on offense.

"... Give [Westlake] credit," he said. "They are a good team. But we let them [stay] in a game by making mistakes. If we want to continue to advance, we have to eliminate mistakes." —
